What is Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is a government-backed and independently verified self-assessment certification which ensures organizations, no matter the size or industry, are protecting themselves from online threats and are practicing good cyber hygiene.
The Cyber Essentials scheme covers five technical areas:
- Firewalls
- Secure Settings
- Secure Access
- Anti-malware
- Patching
Is Cyber Essentials relevant to me and my organization?
If you are bidding for tenders, particularly for UK government tenders, you are highly likely to be required to have Cyber Essentials certification. Equally if your organisation works in Healthcare, Defence, Financial Services or indeed any industry which stores sensitive data, there’s a strong possibility Cyber Essentials is a requirement for your operation. Even if these circumstances don’t apply to you and your company, it is at least a good first step towards demonstrating to your customers and stakeholders that you take cyber security seriously.
Certification also gives you peace of mind that your defences will protect against a wide variety of the most common cyber-attacks, simply because these attacks are looking for targets which do not have the Cyber Essentials technical controls in place.
